Steve Guerdat convincingly claimed the World Championship title in Aachen with commanding performances. Five demanding, world-class courses – and not a single fault for the Swiss rider and his equine partner, Dynamix de Belheme.

The Aachen Soers held its breath. An athletic, bay mare galloped through the packed stadium. Almost silently, she mastered the massive obstacles – one after another – with an ease that seemed almost playful. No murmurs rippled through the stands; no clicking sounds were heard. Just tense silence. And the sheer pleasure of watching this 13-year-old Selle Français mare complete her extraordinary round. In the saddle: a master of style. A versed rider with a storybook career, who only lacked one title until today – World Champion. And without a doubt, there was no one in the vast arena, who did not wholeheartedly wish the 44-year-old this victory. The final fence in this thrilling five-round competition – and the pair cleared it immaculately, too. What followed was a wave of euphoria: A standing ovation, thunderous applause, waving flags, and cheers surging through the legendary Main Stadium. And Steve Guerdat? First of all, he brought his horse to a halt, covered his face with his hands in disbelief – and the very next moment signalled who deserved the credit for this magical moment: his Dynamix de Belheme. “You don’t just automatically encounter such an extraordinary horse as this one every four years – let alone one you get to compete in a World Championship with,” said a visibly moved Steve Guerdat shortly afterwards. At the same time, the Swiss rider admitted that he had been unusually nervous the days before. “I always said I didn’t want to end my career without having won in Aachen,” he explained. “The fact that this dream has now come true – and then at a World Championship of all events – is something truly special and simply indescribable.” With this triumph, Steve Guerdat’s impressive collection of titles is now complete: he is a European Champion, an Olympic Champion and – from today onwards – a World Champion. “My life is different now; I have achieved everything I ever dreamt of.”

Steve Guerdat’s score of 0.86 penalties proved to be an unbeatable benchmark for his fellow competitors. However, the battle for the remaining podium positions could hardly have been more exciting. Ultimately, the silver medal went to a rider, who had improved his performance with each round of the championship: The just 25-year-old Thibeau Spits. He already won the European Championship title with the team in 2025, and just the day before yesterday, he won World Championship Silver with the Belgian team. Now, his 11-year-old stallion, Impress-K van’t Kattenheye Z, helped him secure his first individual medal on a total score of 5.60 penalties. “My career is just beginning and things could hardly be better than they are right now,” said the young Belgian, who had nothing but praise for his horse: “It will be hard to ever repay him for what he does for me. He is simply incredible.”

The story of the third man on the podium is no less emotional. Britain’s Harry Charles experienced a real rollercoaster of emotions in Aachen. Riding the grey mare, LT Holst Freda, the 27-year-old got off to a rocky start in the championship: He picked up eight jumping faults and his disappointment was clearly visible. “I was very unhappy that I wasn’t able to present this mare the way she deserved,” the British show-jumper recounted. At one point, he had even considered not competing in the Final at all, given his score of 7.17 penalty points. What finally changed his mind? “I asked ChatGPT if I still had a chance at a top finish,” he explained with a mischievous smile. The answer was: “Unlikely, but not impossible!” And indeed, everything came together during the last two rounds on the day of the Final – the extraordinary ability of his twelve-year-old equine partner and his own expertise as a rider. With two immaculate rounds, Harry Charles made the unlikely a reality: Leaping from 23rd place to take the bronze medal.

Aachen’s summer fairytale writes another golden chapter – if needs be even in the rain: Amidst a sea of waving flags and carried by the ecstatic cheering of the Aachen crowd, the German team secured the gold medal in the Mercedes-Benz Prize.

You could hear a pin drop in the sold-out Main Stadium at the Soers. Tens of thousands of spectators watched, breathless, as a dark bay stallion flew across the course – clearing maximum-height obstacles with an ease that took one’s breath away. What is considered the gold standard internationally seemed almost effortless for the 12-year-old offspring of Tobago Z.
Then, the final line: judged perfectly. A low murmur rippled through the grandstands as the stallion assessed the massive oxer. One more moment of tense anticipation – then he took off. Fractions of a second later, the stadium erupted in cheers. Otello de Guldenboom had carried his rider, Daniel Deußer, through the course without picking up a single fault to what the rider would later describe a “once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
A standing ovation rewarded a performance that secured the World Championship title for the German team – long before the final rider, Richard Vogel, had even entered the Main Stadium.

And anyone, who thought the atmosphere had already reached its peak, had yet to witness the final ride by the crowd’s favourite. What followed was a round full of emotion and a demonstration of just how easy it can look to master a World Championship course. It made no difference that two time penalties ultimately appeared on the scoreboard. “I don’t think there has ever been a happier scratch score than mine today,” the 30-year-old beamed. He was even able to enjoy a personal victory lap around the Main Stadium with his superstar mount, United Touch S, in front of his home crowd and accompanied by his favourite song, “Die Sonne geht auf” (The sun rises) before the official Medal Ceremony. The evening was simply perfect: Not even the onset of rain was able to dampen the radiant atmosphere in the stadium.

But this special evening had plenty more emotions on offer. Sophie Hinners and her horse, Iron Dames Singclair, were also “carried through the course” by the home crowd. The rider experienced a round that felt “simply gigantic” to her.  And tears flowed long before it was certain that the German team would win Gold, namely, Nadia Ehning, who was sat in the stands surrounded by her children, was overcome by her emotions while her husband Marcus Ehning – the first to go for the German team with Coolio – once again delivered a brilliant performance, as on the previous days. Nadia Ehning probably understood better than anyone what this moment must have meant to her husband. Later, Ehning appeared more relaxed than he had in a long time. “I am simply fascinated by my horse,” said Marcus Ehning, admitting with a wink that he had been much more nervous at this same venue twenty years earlier. Back in 2006, he had been part of the German team that won Bronze in Aachen – the event which had also included that legendary, heart-stopping moment at the wall. But that incident is long since history. And for the 52-year-old, things came full circle again today: Also a member on the team that last won World Championship Gold for Germany in Kentucky, USA, in 2010, he was now standing on top of the podium once more – this time alongside a new generation.

“I am simply happy and incredibly proud of the whole squad,” the national coach, Otto Becker, commented. “What the four of them achieved here was a fantastic advertisement for our sport.” While the victorious team left the rest of the field trailing behind with a score of 4.48, the battle for the remaining medals was a nail-biting affair.
The Belgian team (11.69) secured Silver after a spectacular comeback; the squad comprised Nicola Philippaerts with Katanga v/h Dingeshof, Pieter Devos with Casual DV Z, Thibeau Spits with Impress-K van’t Kattenheye Z and Abdel Saïd with Qathnan Quaker Brimbelles Z.
The bronze medal went to the Olympic Team Champions from Great Britain – Ben Maher with Point Break, Harry Charles with LT Holst Freda, Scott Brash with Hello Mango and Adrian Whiteway with Chacco Volo – the team finished on a final score of 12.98 penalties.

Tomorrow the order of the day is gathering strength for the grand finale in the individual classification on Sunday. If the national coach, Otto Becker, has his way, his riders will ideally secure one or two more individual medals in the LONGINES-Prize, which also marks the sporting conclusion of the FEI World Championships Aachen 2026. One thing is certain: With Daniel Deußer leading the field – currently tying with Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat on 0.86 penalties – followed by Britain’s Ben Maher in third place (1.01), Marcus Ehning ranking fourth (1.78), and Sophie Hinners fifth (1.84), Sunday afternoon promises excitement until the very last fence. The summer fairytale is back in Aachen – and the final golden chapter has yet to be written.

Day 3:
Deutschland liegt in Führung und damit auf der "Pole Position" für den finalen Umlauf in der Teamentscheidung der Weltmeisterschaften in Aachen heute Abend. Mit einem Ergebnis von 3,48 Strafpunkten liegt die deutsche Equipe vor den USA (4,85 Strafpunkte) und Belgien, das mit einem Ergebnis von 7,69 Strafpunkten punktgleich mit Italien auf dem derzeitigen dritten Rang liegt. Mit 8,98 Strafpunkten folgt die britische Equipe auf Rang fünf, ganz dicht gefolgt von Frankreich, auf dessen Konto 8,99 Strafpunkte gingen.

Zudem haben sich auch die schwedische Equipe, die Schweiz, Dänemark und Irland als die Top-10-Nationen aus dem ersten Umlauf für den zweiten, der heute Abend stattfinden wird, qualifiziert.

Um 18.30 Uhr beginnt das Springen mit den Reitern, die für die Einzelwertung an den Start gehen. Ab 20.15 Uhr wird es dann mit den Paaren der Teamwertung interessant.

Da Deutschland derzeit auf dem ersten Rang liegt, gehen die deutschen Paare jeweils am Ende eines jeden Teamdurchlaufs an den Start.
